Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Unresolved GD trivia question--split shows

Okay guys, a break from basketball. This was one of the multi-answer questions left over from my 30-question trivia quiz:

What songs were split in two (at least once) in live performances? An example would be Not Fade Away > Going Down the Road Feeling Bad > Not Fade Away. If you know of a rarely split song, you might offer the intruding song and/or the date or venue when it was split.

NOTE: For purposes of this question, the intruding track has to have lyrics. And Cryptical Envelopment doesn't count, since it's only ever split by The Other One (I think), and on Anthem of the Sun the whole deal was listed as a single song in four parts.

Then, the extra-special bonus question: What was the first song to be split, and when? I actually guessed the song right before I checked the databases, and I was only off by a few days on the date.

Doh! I had just clicked submit when I noticed I'd typed "shows" rather than "songs" in the subject.

Good Lovin--who do you love--caution--good lovin.
Dark Star--god knows what--Dark Star. Ditto TOO. Several times in the Fall of 1971, Me and My Uncle was the insert.

Lovelight was also split in 1969 (6-14, it opens and closes the show.)

5/25/77 - Other One > Wharf Rat > Other One

Not sure if it counts, but:

Sugar Magnolia (10/17/74) > 10/18/74 > 10/19/74 Sets 1-3 > Sunshine Daydream (ends set 3 on 10/19/74)

10/10/76: Dancin' In The Streets>Wharf Rat>Dancin' In The Streets (First Set closer)

Too lazy to deeply research the thing and look astute, but it seems that Playin' In The Band has had a passel of songs thrown in before the final chorus. And you just can't beat a Sugar Magnolia>etc.,etc.,etc,>Sunshine Daydream show.

I really got off on Ratdog opening with Jack Straw>Terrapin>Dark Star>a bunch of other songs>Jack Straw from Wichita cut his buddy down! to close the First Set. That got the crowd jumpin'.

Is NSB the song that was first split?

BTW, SetList doesn't list the NFBM in the middle of New Speedway Boogie. db.etree lists it as a jam. Does it have lyrics or is it just a jam?

I can't verify this--SetList doesn't include School Girl on that night, and the earliest it has is 7-19-66. db.etree attributes the sandwich you're talking about to mid-to-late 66 (circulating with the 2-25-66 CD), which would take the prize. Does "You Don't Love Me" have lyrics or is it just a jam?

Just gave another listen to Schoolgirl > You Don't Love Me > School Girl, what a quality recoding for 1966! Placing an exact date on this has proven difficult. The only labeling on the tape said Longshoreman's. As we know Longshoremans' Hall was the site of several '66 acid tests. When asked about the tape, the Bear said he thought it was recorded right after the Boys returned from their stay in LA. This places a date on the tape to one of 3 nights in April of 1966, the 22nd, 23rd or 24th. Dead Base lists the dates but no set lists. If you haven't given this a listen you are in for real treat, but it is not available for streaming, download it now!

Thanks--just checked it out and there are indeed lyrics. Even if it's not 2-25, it's gotta be sometime in 66, and so this has to be the earliest split song.

First - The most excellent split which no one talks about because no board exists:

6-24-70
Dark Star > Attics Of My Life > Dark Star > Sugar Magnolia > Dark Star > Saint Stephen > China Cat Sunflower > Jam > I Know You Rider

Next - Some of my favorite late 73 splits - Some famous - some that should be:

10-21-73
Playing In The Band > Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo > Big River > Playing In The Band

10-27-73
Playing In The Band > Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo > Big River > Playing In The Band

11-1-73
Morning Dew > Playing In The Band > Uncle John's Band > Playing In The Band

11-10-73
Playing In The Band > Uncle John's Band > Morning Dew > Uncle John's Band > Playing In The Band

11-14-73
Truckin' > The Other One > Big River > The Other One > Eyes Of The World > The Other One > Wharf Rat

11-17-73
Playing In The Band > Uncle John's Band > Morning Dew > Uncle John's Band > Playing In The Band

11-21-73
Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo > Playing In The Band > El Paso > Playing In The Band > Wharf Rat Jam > Dark Star Jam > Wharf Rat > Playing In The Band > Morning Dew

12-1-73
Playing In The Band > Uncle John's Band > Playing In The Band

That 10/10/76 was quite a show. It's almost too bad that I was completely clueless about the Dead when I saw them that day. But not such a bad thing, either, because those outrageous medleys were a big part of what left a smoking crater of my mind. It was an absolutely incredible show, maybe the best I ever saw, except I had no idea what in the world was going on.

I'll go with my first show:

Morning Dew (11/30/73 opener)
-> remainder of 11/30/73
--> all of 12/1/73
---> most of 12/2/73
----> Morning Dew (12/2/73 encore)

My favorite song at the time, so a great way to start.

I could have said...

...but that would have been a stretch. At least Dew bookended a single run.
